Brighton and Hove Greens have ridiculed the Conservative Party's supposed new-found environmental credentials. Ian Davey, Green
Party candidate for Brighton's St Peters and North Laine Ward in the May 3 city council elections, said: "David Cameron and his cronies are trying desperately to portray an image of environmental awareness and concern. The reality is rather different. Tories up and down the country are backing new road building, the biggest programme of airport expansion seen for a generation, and oppose congestion charging.
How can they reconcile policies like this with a supposed new-found enthusiasm for the environment?
"In Brighton and Hove, we've seen the Tories oppose measures to reduce reliance on 4x4s and other gas-guzzler vehicles in the city centre, while neighbouring Tory-controlled East Sussex County Council has pushed through approval for the giant incinerator in Newhaven to burn off our local waste rather than reduce and recycle it."
