Green Party LGBT spokesperson Nigel Tart hit out at Merseyside Police and the Wirral Globe, over a surveillance operation and its reporting, which look set to ruin lives and encourage queerbashing:
"Merseyside Police seem to be celebrating LGBT History Month too early. Their retro-homophobic stakeout of a cottage is just like the good old days, pre Wolfenden. And the local rag, the Wirral Globe, has joined in the fun, by publishing names and addresses. They've even treated us to a photo of the cottage (call me a pedant, but black and white would have been more authentic), so we know where to go and queerbash. Hopefully next year they'll broaden the partnership of this historical re-enactment, to include the local sheriff, who could put the men in the stocks.
"I must also pay tribute to New Labour for reinvigorating the dying art of cottage surveillance, with their Sexual Offences Act 2003. What a wheeze - not even the Tories thought of creating a separate, gay-only offence.
"It's ironic that the cottage is in New Brighton. Here in old Brighton the party-pooping police are actually more interested in stopping queerbashing. "
