The Greens are disappointed by the judgement of the Employment Tribunal today, that Islington Council infringed Ms Ladelle's 'divine right' to discriminate against same sex couples. We believe all registrars should be required to perform Civil Partnership ceremonies. The party's LGBT spokesperson, Nigel Tart, commented: 'No one would tolerate a registrar refusing to marry a couple whose religious views offended them. It's time we woke up to the fact that homophobic discrimination is illegal - whatever the motivation. I hope Islington Council will stand firm and appeal against this outdated judgement.' The Green Party is still the only party to call for full marriage equality. The current Civil Partnership system grew out of the London Partnerships Register, which was initiated by Darren Johnson, then leader of the Green Group on the GLA, in his maiden speech in City Hall.
