The Green Party in Brighton and Hove celebrated Brighton Pride with human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and Caroline Lucas, MEP and candidate for Brighton Pavilion in next year's General Election. Peter and Caroline spent the eve of Pride debating the legacy of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots and took to the Green Party float the 'Pride of Brighton' for the Pride march (photos attached)
Phelim Mac Cafferty on behalf of LGBT Greens welcomed the fantastic response Greens received:
"First there was an electric atmosphere for a meeting packed to standing-room-only to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall
riots. The meeting was called to celebrate the legacy of the riots but to also debate the way forward: issues such as the exclusion of
trans rights and LGB harassment from the Equalities Bill and the ban on gay and bi men donating blood were high on the agenda. LGBT
Greens will now be pushing for action from the government on the ban.
"Then there was the fantastic response which our float received at Pride! The 'Pride of Brighton' weighed her anchor for a maiden voyage through a sea of delighted faces, cheers and the most powerful and humbling of welcomes.
"Captained by Caroline Lucas MEP and candidate for Brighton Pavilion in next year's General Election, Green Party members dressed as
mermaids and sailors, in costumes made and designed by a professional dress designer, Shymeoni. We danced to a music system
powered 100% by the sun while our float ran on old chip fat.
"Greens prove that we can have fun and take part in one of the world's most magnificent Pride events in a way which respects the planet.
"On behalf of everyone in The Green Party we would like to thank the people of Brighton and Hove, from around the country and the world who made us feel so welcome. We also want to thank everyone who put so much effort into Pride to make it so memorable and enjoyable!"
