SEX education lessons in Brighton and Hove schools should teach pupils about sexual health risks facing the gay community, according to the Green Party’s candidate to be Kemptown MP, Cllr Ben Duncan.
Speaking ahead of World AIDS day, which will be marked across the globe next Tuesday, December 1st, Mr Duncan said teachers should be given support and training to ensure they can talk confidentally and sensitively about issues of sexual health facing young gay men.
“Young gay men remain the group of young people most at risk of contracting HIV – and the Government needs a long-term strategy to reduce infection rates still further,” he said.
“This must include better sex education, reflecting the increased risks faced by young gay men – but teachers can’t be expected to deliver this without extra support.”
Mr Duncan added: “There is an Early Day Motion being considered by MPs at the moment recognising the importance of World AIDS Day and calling for exactly this.
“For whatever reason Kemptown MP Des Turner has not signed up to this campaign – and I urge him to do so as a matter of urgency.”
