LGBT faith event aims to build bridges
A free event on Wednesday 15 February has been organised by staff at Brighton & Hove City Council trying to build bridges between faith communities and the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The event – ‘Swords into Ploughshares: Building Bridges between the LGBT and Faith Communities’ – runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at Brighton Unitarian Church in New Road, Brighton.
It has been organised by the council’s LGBT Workers Forum to mark LGBT History Month. The debate will be chaired by Razia Aziz of independent consultancy The Equality Academy.
The council’s cabinet member for communities, equalities and public protection, Councillor Ben Duncan, said: “There are important community safety issues here, but it’s also about mutual respect and understanding and a realisation that communities are made up of many people, with diverse views and ways of living.
“The debate about faith and sexual orientation in the public arena is highly polarised, with many people effectively silenced by their fear of rejection, hostility, verbal or physical attack or even death.
“This event aims to avoid posturing and point-scoring and instead encourage people to listen to other people’s points of view and find common ground.”
Please email lgbtworkersforum@brighton-hove.gov.uk or phone 01273 291280 to let the LGBT Forum know you are planning to attend.
