Yorkshire and the Humber Region Green Party LGBT Group
LBGT Greens in the NorthWe don't yet have an LGBT Green Group in Yorkshire and the Humber region where I live. Nor are there groups in the North West or North East. But I think the time is right to get organised - across the north or in the regions. There are a few reasons I think this.
- We have an increasing number of Green councillors in the region. This gives us more opportunity than ever to influence our local councils' approaches to LGBT
issues. The time is right to focus on how they respond to new legislation preventing discrimination in goods and services on grounds of sexual orientation.
- Our local parties need our input, to influence thinking on LBGT and other equality issues. And they need our support in getting more councillors elected. Let's
also support our local LGBT candidates in council and parliamentary elections.
- The Yorkshire and Humber region has a good chance of getting a Green MEP in 2009. The work is already beginning on achieving that. We've all seen the high level
of support our MEPs in the southeast give to LGBT issues. Lets make sure the Yorkshire MEP does the same.
- We can do a lot to win over the LGBT vote. We can debunk the myth that the Green Party is a one-issue party by letting other LGBT people know the party's stance
on equality, social justice and human rights issues. We can wave a Green banner alongside the rainbow flag at any number of events.
- We can support each other in getting more involved in our local parties.
- And last but not least, it might also be fun!
